Offering everything from bistros, connoisseurs of African cuisine and the best comfort food around, Pretoria is sure to delight residents and visitors with a rich variety of exciting food on its Jacaranda-lined streets this season.

El Pistolero directly translates to a gunman or gangster and their renditions of Mexican food is to die for. Innovative starters include nachos grande with tortilla chips, cheese sauce, jalapeños, drunken beans, guacamole, salsa mexicana, queso fresco, spring onion . Conclude with churros with chilli chocolate sauce and milk jam or a beautiful panna cotta.

The Burger Bistro’s secret burger is an off-menu item that can only be ordered using a code known by regular patrons.

This American-style bistro specializes in gourmet burgers that are too delicious to be pretentious. The burgers are so big, they package them in boxes. Their signature burgers include the Three Stooges with bacon, avo and feta; The Naas Botha with biltong, in-house biltong sauce and The Secret Burger which is an off-menu item that you can only order if you know about it. The highlights are their innovative sauces like cherry tomato jam, raspberry jam and wasabi mayo. If you’re feeling extra-adventurous, try the Elvis Presley with peanut butter and bacon.

If you love Mexican food just as much as I do, then Jo Mexican is the perfect eatery to dine at this summer. They have the best jalapeños poppers in town, stuffed with cream cheese, crumbed, deep-fried to perfection and served with confit tomato sour cream. Drop by on Burrito Monday and Taco Tuesday, where you can get some of their popular dishes at a discounted price. Don’t leave without trying the shredded-beef chimichanga with slow cooked beef, Gallo Pinto rice, drunken beans and cheddar cheese, rolled into a burrito and fried until golden brown. This is exquisitely drizzled with crema and they’re famous “almost death” sauce.
