FMF MEDIA BRIEFING INVITATION : VIOLATION OF THE RULE OF LAW GAVE SA THE GUPTAS AND ZUMA CORRUPTION – 13 JUNE 2018
15 JUNE 2018
Violation of the Rule of Law gave SA the Guptas and Zuma corruption
Pay attention to the Rule of Law. It matters.
Its repeated violation gave us state capture and the Zupta era.
Speaker: Rex van Schalkwyk – Chairman of the FMF Rule of Law Board of Advisors and former judge of the Supreme Court of South Africa
Former Judge Rex van Schalkwyk’s briefing will demonstrate:
- The Rule of Law stands between a civilised society and tyranny.
- State Capture happened because of a systematic violation of the Rule of Law.
- In the absence of the Rule of Law, doors are wide open to arbitrary political action.
He will discuss recent FMF research that demonstrates that government and particularly Parliament have abandoned the founding values of the Constitution and show a systematic violation of the Rule of Law.
From 23 pieces of national legislation analysed, 21 were drafted with no apparent concern for the Rule of Law.
This is what happened in SA under Zuma. The absence of the Rule of Law enabled the Guptas to flourish.
It must not be allowed to happen again.

ABOUT the FMF
The FMF is an independent, non-profit, public benefit organisation, created in 1975 by pro-free market business and civil society national bodies to work for a non-racial, free and prosperous South Africa. As a policy organisation it promotes sound economic policies and the principles of good law. As a think tank it seeks and puts forward solutions to some of the country’s most pressing problems: unemployment, poverty, growth, education, health care, electricity supply, and more. The FMF was instrumental in the post-apartheid negotiations and directly influenced the Constitutional Commission to include the property rights clause: a critical cornerstone of economic freedom.
The FMF has a wealth of information in papers, articles and opinion pieces available on the website which can influence the public debate and present alternative policies to the people of South Africa. Please look at our website www.freemarketfoundation.com. Also see Facebook and Twitter.
