SA’s Michelin star chef to open restaurant at Tswalu Kalahari

SA’S MICHELIN STAR CHEF TO OPEN RESTAURANT AT TSWALU KALAHARI

26 APRIL 2019

South Africa’s first Michelin star chef, Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen, is returning home to open his own restaurant at the Tswalu Kalahari private game reserve in the Northern Cape.?Klein Jan is the result of a global partnership with the Oppenheimer family, which was born of a shared passion and vision for all things South African including the country’s food, people and shared culture and arts. This led to a project that celebrates the unexplored culinary territory of the vast Kalahari.

The restaurant will be driven by the values of local authenticity, heritage and sustainability of the environment. It will become the place where the region’s vast culinary offering will be translated into world-class cuisine. It’s also where Van der Westhuizen and his team will also design the Tswalu dining experience; discovering this unexplored culinary territory with its unlimited potential has been a dream of van der Westhuizen’s for years.

In addition, the Jan Innovation Studio development kitchen – where a team of chefs and students will continually develop and innovate South African cuisine – will open its doors in Cape Town. The Jan Innovation Studio will also be home to Jan The Journal, a bi-annual publication that shares the chef’s ideas, passion and curiosity about the culinary world.

Restaurant Lease Opportunity at The Granary Building, Buitenkant Street, Cape Town

RESTAURANT LEASE OPPORTUNITY AT THE GRANARY BUILDING, BUITENKANT STREET, CAPE TOWN

31 JANUARY 2019

Background

The Property Transaction Management Branch of the City of Cape Town’s Property Management Department, appointed a professional team for the planning and overseeing of the rehabilitation and restoration of the The Granary Building, Buitenkant Street, Cape Town. The restoration of the building has been completed.

The Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation leases a portion of the building and the remaining spaces will be occupied by City of Cape Town line departments, a museum and restaurant space (the latter is the subject of this email).

The restaurant space opens onto a pedestrianised portion of Longmarket Street between Harrington and Buitenkant Streets. This will have a demarcated area as a spill out space for the restaurant.

The restaurant space has been left in its original state with unpainted walls and exposed timber ceiling, which serves as the floor above. Some stonework is still evident which are the remains of what is thought to be an old garden boundary wall dating from the mid-1800’s. Internal fit-out will need approvals by Heritage Western Cape (HWC) as the building has been declared a Provincial Heritage Site (PHS).

Proposal

The Property Management Department, will be advertising a tender for the lease of this restaurant space at The Granary Building, Buitenkant Street, Cape Town.

We intend to publish the advert in the middle of January 2019.

We wish to enquire whether you, as the Restaurant Association of South Africa, would be able to circulate the advert for this opportunity to your list of tourism operators and/or experienced restaurant operators?  This will assist us with reaching as many potential tenderers as possible.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards,
