08 MARCH 2018
The deadly Listeriosis outbreak in South Africa means there has never been a more critical time to mitigate the risk of infection across the food supply chain and ensure that your business is not affected.
Listeriosis is a serious infection usually caused by eating food contaminated with the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes. An estimated 1,600 people get Listeriosis each year, and about 260 die (Centres for Disease Control and Prevention – CDC). The infection is most likely to affect pregnant women and their new-borns, adults aged 65 or older, and people with weakened immune systems e.g. due to recovery from illness or surgeries , HIV positive, Tuberculosis infection.
There is no vaccine or pre-exposure prophylaxis that can prevent infection. The main preventive measure is good basic hygiene, and proper, safe food preparation and storage.
